Like any good sidekick, she’s also Ryuko’s cheerleader, with a steady supply of frantic, kinetic pantomime monologues. As Ryuko’s quirky best friend, she plays Miss Exposition, explaining Honnouji Academy to the newcomer. She does the ‘running late to school with a piece of toast in your mouth’ thing. (Is it foreshadowing or just a coincidence that Gamagoori and Mako both appear in this early scene?)Įarly Mako seems determined to be the perfect schoolgirl anime character. Even Gamagoori crashing into the classroom and causing chaos can’t wake her up. Before she’s even named, you see her asleep in class, complete with classic anime snot bubble. You get some idea of the sort of character Mako is going to be in her first appearance. In some alternate reality, she’s the star of her own anime sitcom. In our universe, Mako is the goofy sidekick character. All the hardcore stuff about hot-blooded fighting is just a distraction for her.
#MAKO MANKANSHOKU SERIES#
It’s as if her anime series was supposed to be a Kyoto Animation comedy featuring high school girls having slice-of-life hijinks. She is like the heroine of a completely different story. She doesn’t have a vendetta of revenge, or alien invasion family issues to deal with. Mako is the Krillin of Kill La Kill: she doesn’t have any superpowers, super-strength or impossible weapons.

From Chopper to Happy, cute and funny sidekick types always grab a lot of attention.īut she also sticks out for being the one average, ordinary, relatively normal character in the series. Partially, it’s because I like comedy, and Mako is the comic relief character. One big reason for this is Mako Mankanshoku.ĭon’t get me wrong, pretty much every Kill La Kill character is well-written and entertaining to watch. Even now, I can re-watch this Trigger series and still be grabbed by it. Even with her sudden betrayal towards Ryuko, the two managed to make up, showing how strong their bond and friendship are.Kill La Kill was an amazing anime when it first came out in 2013. This shows that she does have her slip-ups and is highly susceptible to temptations, along with the rest of her family who obsess over wealth. However, the power went to Mako's head and she became enveloped in the wealth. With this higher status, they were given extravagant homes and luxuries. Please bear with me because my memory on this anime is a bit hazy, but I believe this was especially shown in the episode where Mako and Ryuko started a club where Ryuko would fight against other life fiber uniform users. Not only that, but she also cares deeply for her family and their well-being. Those two are inseparable and Mako supports her in any way she can. She is a little bundle of energy and eccentricity, but throughout the series, the audience gets to see the caring side to her. The contrasting traits of dedicated and a lazy slob clash, but there is reasoning behind her dedication. Riko Takitsubo from To Aru Kagaku no Railgun
